We’re proud to share that the University of Georgia’s McBay Science Library 4th Floor – renovated by May Architecture – was voted “Best Study Spot” in The Red & Black Most Best Awards. This recognition speaks to the impact of creating spaces where students can truly thrive.
Since reopening, visits to the library have surged by 42%, signaling a powerful shift in how students are using and embracing the space. The transformation was driven by a simple, but essential idea: give students what they actually need.
Inside the Transformation
What was once an outdated and underutilized floor is now a vibrant, flexible environment built to support the way students live and learn today. The design prioritizes comfort, focus, and wellness without sacrificing function or aesthetic.
- Zoned for Success: A mix of quiet zones, group work areas, and semi-private nooks allows students to choose how they want to engage with the space—whether they’re prepping for finals or collaborating on a project.
- Wellness-Driven Details: Ergonomic furniture, circadian lighting, and thoughtfully designed acoustics help reduce fatigue and eye strain, creating an atmosphere that’s as energizing as it is calming.
- A Space That Adapts: Flexible layouts and mobile furnishings ensure the space can evolve alongside student needs of today and into the future.
The result is a space that students don’t just use but they love.
At May Architecture, we believe academic design should elevate the student experience, empower productivity, and reflect the culture of learning itself. The McBay Science Library does exactly that, and we’re honored to see it become a campus favorite.
