At the heart of the University of Georgia’s campus, the Hill Community has long served as a foundational experience for first-year students. Originally built in 1961, the five-residence hall complex – Boggs, Church, Hill, Mell, and Lipscomb – has become more than a collection of buildings. It has become a place where students form lasting connections, experience independence, and begin their academic journeys.
In partnership with UGA, May Architecture led a multi-year, two-phase renovation to breathe new life into this historic community while preserving the spirit of its mid-century modern design. With the final phase completed in summer 2025, Boggs, Church, and Hill Halls now join Mell and Lipscomb in reflecting a bold new vision for student living.
Designing for Belonging and Balance
The renovation focused on creating environments that support both personal well-being and shared experience, which are both essential to a successful first year on campus.
- Community-First Spaces: Lounges, lobbies, and kitchen areas were reimagined to foster interaction, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging.
- Upgraded Amenities: Laundry and bathroom facilities were modernized for comfort, accessibility, and efficiency, enhancing daily life for nearly 800 students.
- Preserving the Past, Designing for the Future: Thoughtful design details maintain the architectural integrity of the original structures while introducing fresh materials, lighting, and layouts that align with contemporary student needs.
This transformation is a resounding commitment to creating spaces where students can live, grow, and thrive from day one.
Student housing should do more than house students. It should support the full experience of learning, connecting, and becoming. The renewed Hill Community does just that.
