Each year, Building Design+Construction’s Healthcare Annual Report highlights the most influential firms, forward-thinking projects, and cutting-edge ideas shaping healthcare environments across the country. In 2024, May Architecture was honored to be included among these national leaders for our work on a transformative concept redefining patient-centered care.
In collaboration with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), we developed the Universal Room, an adaptable, private care environment designed to support patients throughout multiple phases of treatment without the need to transfer rooms. The concept reimagines the entire care journey by delivering services directly to patients in a single, thoughtfully equipped space.
This design model is rooted in empathy and efficiency. By minimizing patient movement and bringing care teams and technology to the bedside, the Universal Room enhances dignity, streamlines workflows, and improves outcomes. It’s a powerful example of how architecture can drive operational change and elevate the human experience.
Being featured in BD+C’s Healthcare Annual Report underscores our belief that true innovation comes from collaboration; listening to the needs of patients and providers, aligning with clinical goals, and designing for what’s next.
We’re proud to stand alongside SOM and other national leaders in pushing the boundaries of healthcare design.
