Designing Comfort and Clarity in Outpatient Oncology

This project expands an existing infusion clinic and renovates office spaces to create a new Oncology Clinic, Phlebotomy Clinic, and USP 797/800 Compounding Pharmacy within an active medical office building. Together, these spaces support a fully integrated outpatient oncology care environment.

The design aligns with UVA Health finish standards while responding to the building’s existing character. Softly rounded soffits, coordinated flooring transitions, and custom countertops establish visual continuity across clinics. Natural daylight is emphasized throughout the space through strategic planning, accent lighting, and glazing systems with biophilic films, creating a calm and cohesive patient experience.

A primary challenge was organizing the expanded clinical program around existing core elements, including stairways and large electrical rooms that were required to remain in place. Careful space planning allowed the full oncology program to be accommodated while maintaining efficient circulation and clear separation between patient and staff workflows.

Several design strategies prioritize wellness and operational efficiency. The phlebotomy lab is positioned at an exterior corner, providing nearly 60 linear feet of windows and access to natural light, an uncommon feature for spaces typically located deep within floor plates. Infusion bays are arranged parallel to exterior glazing to maximize daylight exposure. Bays are organized into four bay pods with centrally located nurse stations, improving staff visibility and responsiveness. Each bay includes adjustable privacy curtains and interior windows, allowing natural light to extend throughout the infusion area while offering patients flexibility between privacy and community.

The result is a thoughtfully integrated oncology environment that balances technical requirements, staff efficiency, and patient comfort through daylight driven, human centered design.
